Mary Hobdy, widow of Fred Hobdy and former secretary to Grambling president R.W.E. Jones, passes

My friend Mary Hobdy, widow of Grambling coaching legend Fred Hobdy and former longtime secretary to GSU’s second president R.W.E. “Prez” Jones, died at approximately 3:18 p.m. today after suffering for years with cancer.

Her last public appearance came during homecoming weekend in 2009, when an endowed professorship was dedicated in Fred Hobdy’s honor.

She was comforted in her final time by the news that a long-debated plan to name the university’s new Assembly Center in honor of her husband — Louisiana’s winningest college coach, and still the only one to win a men’s national championship — had finally been agreed upon, though Ms. Mary did not live to see the official ceremony, slated for May.

Arrangements were still incomplete this afternoon.

Here is TDR’s slideshow of images from homecoming weekend 2009:

What a wonderful person, kind-hearted, sweet, caring, funny and full of love for God and mankind. The best mother-in-law anyone could ask for! I will miss you and our time together. Thanks for everything and giving me such a wonderful wife, your daughter, Lisa. God bless you Mom.
