A dream so long unfulfilled, the Eddie G. Robinson Museum is now a star that shines almost too brightly for Wilbert Ellis.
He goes by, but not too much.
“It looks so good,” says the longtime Grambling baseball coach and athletic administrator, a Robinson family friend. “I go from time to time, but I still get so emotional. To get a chance to enjoy it after all these years, it’s so special.”
He recently visited the ailing Mary Hobdy, widow of Grambling legend Fred Hobdy, to visit. While there, he said she offered memorabilia for inclusion in the museum space, as per Coach Robinson’s wishes. Rob always said he wanted fellow key contributors to the school’s legacy to be featured as well.
Ellis himself has been recovering of late — from eye surgery, corrective work on an old cataract. That’s limited his ability to get around over the last few days. But Ellis will be ready, he said, for Friday’s initial conference call from the NCAA as it plans this year’s super regional baseball events. Ellis has been an advisor on those efforts for years now.
