Grambling recruiting: Texas RB Reginald Perry; see video

Texas District 4A-21 offensive MVP Reginald Perry, a shifty 5-6, 165-pound tailback from Houston-Yates, has signed with Grambling. The one-star prospect rushed for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns last season, and will play as part of the Space City Classic prep All-Star Game this weekend at Houston’s Delmar Stadium.

Yet, perhaps owing to his size, he did not receive an offer to play college football. “I was pretty down after signing day,” Perry said. “I felt I should have gotten a chance.”

GET IN THE GAME: Houston’s Reginald Perry isn’t this staff’s only late add at running back.

As a junior reserve, Perry had 55 carries for 465 yards and four TDs in 2008. He exploded into his senior year, rushing for 251 yards and three TDs (on just 15 carries) in the season-opening Booker-Bryant Classic against Houston-Booker T. Washington, then helped Yates to the school’s state-record 33rd consecutive postseason berth.

“Perry proved he was one of the finest in Houston ISD,” Scout.com’s Ahmard Vital said. “He averaged over nine yards a carry.”

More recently, Perry ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash during a Feb. 20 college tryout session sponsored by the Houston Independent School District at Reliant Park.

Perry, also a track star at Yates, had mentioned interest in Air Force, Baylor, Colorado State, Houston, Minnesota and Tulsa.
