Keith Wagner, who served most recently in a brief stint as running backs coach at Winston-Salem, is set to join the staff at Grambling — though his new role remains unclear.
Coaches and administrators at Grambling have made no official hiring announcement since the offseason exits of James Spady and Jay Davis, former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, respectively. Departed long-time wide receivers coach Sammy White was replaced by veteran assistant Bob Leahy — but he will not assume the duties of coordinator.
UPDATE: I’m hearing that Wagner will coach the Grambling offensive line, a position handled since 2007 by Spady.
Wagner was brought in as Winston-Salem’s running backs coach and strength and conditioning coordinator during this offseason, as newly hired head coach Connell Maynor began building a staff. Before that, Wagner had enjoyed a return as running backs coach at Abilene Christian, where he finished his collegiate playing career in 1993, and helped the Wildcats advance to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II playoffs.
“He is the running backs coach, but could easily be the offensive line coach,” Maynor said upon hiring Wagner. “He is a great strength and conditioning coach and the weight room is his passion. His expertise extends across so many areas that he will be involved in every aspect of our program. He has been coaching for the last 12 years. He reminds me of myself with his undying passion for the game of football.”
Wagner started for two seasons at offensive guard for Texas Christian University through 1992, then was on the 1996 Scottish Claymores club in NFL Europe that claimed a World Bowl Championship.
He’s spent the bulk of his career coaching in Texas, beginning at Ranger College — a community college 90 miles west of Fort Worth — where Wagner was offensive and defensive line coach, and strength and conditioning coach from 1998-99.
Wagner then made stops at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas (offensive line; strength coach, 2000); North Carolina A&T (offensive line coach; strength coach, 2001-02 — a period that overlaps with Broadway’s tenure as defensive line coach at the University of North Carolina); Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas (offensive coordinator; offensive line coach; strength coach, 2003-04); Central Arkansas (defensive line coach, 2005, as the Bears claimed a Southland Conference championship); and then at Mary Carroll High in Corpus Christi, Texas (defensive coordinator; linebackers coach; defensive line coach; strength coach (2006-08).

I wonder if Broadway has called Shyne yet for the OC job. Sure would love to have him.
Who is Shyne?
Another gypsy. He must live in a van or a pickup with a camper.I lost count of all the places he's worked since 1998. I'm sure he won't last here but a season, Bayou Classic will be the last time we see this guy.
Memo to Coach Broadway, there are coaches in Louisiana you can hire, since your employer is located there.
Obviously he doesn't want someone from Lousiana. If yoi were the boss you would want to make your own hires.. So let him do the same!!! If you are a Gramblinite "Shame on YOU". Smh
"Shine" is the nickname of former Bethune Cookman coach Alwin "Shine" Wyatt who ran a wing-bone style offense and was a very colorful coach at BC.
this coach doesn't stay around long, so why hire him? come on broadway hire someone with better credentials. Let's hire someone with the mastermind like the defense coordinator cliff yoshida.
First, let's see where they place the new coach. His role may not be as significant as we think. I have to admit his coaching credentials are not as polished as the other GSU coaches but, who knows what he might bring to the table? You see the reaction with the hiring of Coach Lehay, but I have to admit his credentials are very good!! I am sure these guys got one hell of a game plan this season. We'll see at the Black and Gold game what we are working with.
Actually, he has an extensive resume. Just because there's no "big name" school listed doesn't mean the guy can't coach or isn't a good hire. We tend to get caught up in "names" when honestly there are lots of guys who simply never got their "break" due to any number of reasons. I have a good friend who is a helluva high school coach but has been held back due to "politics" and favortism. We shall see how this works out!
I agree with that! That's why I said,"who knows what he brings to the table". I just spoke to a friend of mine and he spoke on the politics in coachng and what goes on behind close doors that we don't know about. This maybe his big break to showcase what he is truly capable of. Just like I mentioned earlier,I am quite sure these coaches got one hell of a game plan brewing up over at GSU and we will see at the Black and Gold game!
Has "Shyne" applied for the position? Or does anyone have that type of ear close to the program?
I don't see Broadway hiring anyone that will not benefit the program… Damn the man hasn't even worn his first official Grambling shirt and the doubt is already out there… geesh.
