Grambling recruiting: Florida RB Walter Holsey added to 2010 class
Grambling has added Gainesville (Fla.) running back Walter Holsey, who rushed for 945 yards and eight touchdowns on 126 carries as a senior, to its 2010 signing class.
The zippy Hosley (5-9, 180; 4.38 in the 40-yard dash) expressed interest in UCF, Iowa State, Auburn, and Stanford. A two-sport track star, Holsey was open during the recruiting process to playing either offense or defense — something he did as a junior.
“I’d prefer to play running back in college, but I’d also be open to playing safety,” the one-star recruit has said. “As a safety I feel like I can read an offense like a quarterback can read a defense. I also have good footwork like a corner, but I’m a better tackler. Overall, I think I’d be best as a running back because of my vision. That is my key thing. Plus I’ve been playing running back since I was like eight years old.”
Running back is a looming need for Grambling, which will see a senior season in 2010 for the productive tandem of Cornelius Walker and Frank Warren.
Holsey, honorable-mention all-area as a senior, helped the 10-2 Gainesville to Florida’s Class 4A-Region 2 semifinals. He was also a first-team all-area selection in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles in 2009, qualifying for Florida’s Class 3A state track and field meet in the 300-meter hurdles.
Fast and strong, Holsey has been clocked at 14.5 in the 110m hurdles, 38.9 in 300-meter hurdles, 22′.3″ in the long jump and 44′.11″ in the triple jump. Even as a junior, benched a max of 310 pounds, box squat a max of 675, and did a a power clean 300.
In 2008, the versatile Holsey recorded 45 tackles at defensive back and ran for 200 yards as a spread-offense rusher.
“I had to play due to the lack of skill and depth at corner,” Holsey said, “but I switched back to running back for the last two games and I had 125 yards rushing against the district champions (Orange Park).”
LOOKING AHEAD
Grambling is pursuing Powder Springs (Ga.) junior defensive back Kadetrix Marcus of Powder Springs, Ga., who would become part of next year’s class. Marcus has an offer from USC, after attending the program’s junior day, and has said he’s also heard from Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse, Connecticut, and Central Florida.

Comment made on March 5, 2010 at 10:03 amIn year one, it was noted that Coach B’way didn’t announce prop signees. Not sure if that’s changed or not… I notice no comment from the staff on this signee but apparently Deriso has access/knowledge about signings. I agree…hope he’s eligible.
Comment made on March 6, 2010 at 9:53 amPretty sure he is eligible. I am very impressed on the in-state and out-of-state recruits GSU are getting. Looks to be a bright future ahead for “THE ICON”.
