Neither team has won a game, so there is something on the line in this non-conference series between Grambling and Centenary.
Last year, the two north Louisiana baseball teams split, with Grambling claiming victory in Shreveport and the Gents evening the series on the return trip.
So, there’s a mutual respect, too.
“They are going to be well coached,” said first-year Grambling skipper James Cooper. “Coach (Ed) McCann runs a tight ship; he’s a pretty fiery coach. All good teams reflect the attitude of the head coach. I’m pretty sure he will have the guys fired up.”
GSU plays a pair of doubleheaders, both starting at 1 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday. The series was scheduled to begin on Friday, but rain moved the games.
Grambling dropped a trio of weekend contests at Stephen F. Austin to open the 2010 campaign, then stumbled badly against LA Tech last Tuesday.
Despite the losses, Cooper said he was pleasantly surprised by some of his early-game pitching performances.
“It’s ahead of where we thought it would be,” Cooper said. “Adrian Turner kept us in the game against Stephen F. Austin. We think those guys can carry us, and we know this game is all about pitching. Good pitching beats good hitting any day.”
Turner, a junior, is joined by sophomore right-hand pitcher Eric Zagone and junior righty Brandon Wright at the top of the rotation. Grambling’s Jeremy Shelby, moved to No. 2 in the batting order, is now No. 4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with .417 batting average.
Centenary, meanwhile, is coming off a series in which it lost all three games to No. 1 LSU.
