Updated on Thursday afternoon.
The entrance of former Alabama player and coach Mike Shula, now quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, has pushed Grambling’s Rod Broadway further down East Carolina’s wish list.
The program had initially contacted Broadway, in his third year at Grambling, early in its ongoing search to replace Skip Holtz, who left last week to become the new head coach at South Florida. Then, Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill pulled his name from the running, while Liberty coach Danny Rocco finalized a new contract extension — and the door appeared to be cracking for Broadway’s candidacy. The Grambling coach made a previous stop at ECU, as have two of his assistants.
Shula now appears to top East Carolina’s list of remaining principal candidates — a group that includes Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill, an ECU alum; and East Carolina co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler.
UPDATE: Shula removed his name from the search, and East Carolina eventually chose Ruffin McNeill to replace Holtz.
