Mississippi Valley makes its choice; Grambling's Sam Washington passed over

Mississippi Valley State will hold a news conference today at 2 p.m. in its Business Education Building at Itta Bena to name a new head football coach.

The search included Valley product Sam Washington, Grambling’s defensive line coach for the past three seasons, but administrators are expected to name University of North Alabama defensive coordinator Karl Morgan to replace Willie Totten, who stepped down Nov. 30.

There were three other finalists beyond Morgan and Washington: former NFL receiver and Savannah (Ga.) High coach Charlie Brown; Arkansas Baptist College head football coach Richard Wilson and — in a late add — Stillman head coach L.C. Cole.

Disappointing that Cole still isn’t getting a fair shake, with several reports about the Valley search over the weekend correctly mentioning the NCAA investigation at Alabama State during his time there, but not that Cole was later cleared of any major infractions.
