Nicholls State has scheduled a news conference for noon today in one of the head coaching searches that included Grambling offensive coordinator James Spady.
The FCS Southland Conference school is expected to name Central Missouri offensive coordinator Charlie Stubbs to take over the program. The 54-year old spent two years at Central Missouri, calling plays and coaching quarterbacks.
A news conference at Division II Grand Valley State, where Spady has also applied, is pending — but hasn’t been scheduled because the Division II program had not received an official resignation letter from Chuck Martin, who is expected to leave to coach defensive backs at Notre Dame.
Spady, a third-year Grambling assistant, was one of the group interviewed last week by an eight-person university search committee. The front runner for this job is said to be Matt Mitchell, the program’s current defensive coordinator.
Martin was still going through the background-check process overnight. New Irish coach Brian Kelly is a former head coach at Grand Valley, this year’s national runner up in Division II.
