Doug Williams on Southern job: ‘A little hypothetical’
Grambling legend Doug Williams downplayed a weekend job interview with Southern University, his alma mater’s main rival.
But, Williams said, he was curious to hear what Baton Rouge school administrators had to say regarding the open head football coaching position.
“They called, and you’ve got to listen,” Williams told me. “It doesn’t cost anything to listen, and I was at home.”
Williams is from nearby Zachary, and was visiting his mother before a Sunday NFL game between New Orleans and Tampa Bay, where he has served as a front-office executive since 2004. Williams’ new contract with the club runs through February.
He had denied contact with Southern recently, and told me that the school first contacted him on Friday. “I didn’t talk to anybody at Southern until last weekend,” Williams said. “I have too much respect for Pete.”
Pressed about his feelings on taking over the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s only other Louisiana-based program, Williams said: “I didn’t plan this. It’s still a ways off. We didn’t talk numbers, or any specifics. We’re getting a little hypothetical right now.”

Thanks Nick…hopefully now my phone will stop ringing over this. Personally, no big deal but some folk really got upset. I see it as his right (and duty to himself and family) to listen to what they had to say.
