Though TheDerisoReport typically focuses on Grambling football, a number of friendly readers have sent in notes inquiring about men’s basketball recruiting.
In today’s mailbag, we’ll talk about a trio of signings for second-year coach Rick Duckett: Demarcus Blunt, 6-5 guard, Albany Technical College, Albany, Ga.; Rydell Harris, 6-4 guard, Richwood (La.) High; and Jacobee Lee, 6-5 forward, Huntington High, Shreveport, La.
The coaches say Grambling is still on the recruiting trail.
“At this time, we have signed two young men in the early period and one in the spring period,” Grambling assistant Phillip Stitt told me. “We are in the process now of looking for some post players who can fulfill our needs.”
Here’s a TDR scouting report on the new guys …
DEMARCUS BLUNT averaged 11 points, 4.5 assists, and 6.5 rebounds per game at Albany. That pushed him to 22nd in scoring and 12th in rebounds in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association — and All-Region XVII first-team honors.
He was then chosen to participate in the second annual Florida vs. Georgia All-Star Showcase in Daytona Beach, Fla., on March 14. (A highlight video from the game is embedded below.)
Blunt, a product of southwest Georgia’s Chrisp County, also considered North Florida, according to Rivals.
RYDELL HARRIS was a key cog as Richwood marched to a Class 3A state basketball title last season, averaging more than 12 points a game. He was an early signing for Grambling.
“My dreams came true. I’m happy because my dad won’t have to pay for college,” Harris said. “I think I can be a nice point guard — a playmaker. I can help get the ball down low, and I can score when I want to.”
As a junior, Harris averaged 13.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. Rivals also reports that he considered Stephen F. Austin.
“Harris is an intriguing two-guard prospect,” according to Scout, “He isn’t very bouncy, but he has excellent speed with ball and is a quite crafty handler, especially in the open court.”
JACOBEE LEE, an All-District 1-5A performer, averaged 12 points a game as Huntington beat former 4A finalist Bossier, 1A finalist Arcadia and 5A semifinalist West Monroe over the last regular season.
Lee got stronger as the 2008-09 campaign grew longer — upping his average to 15.3 points a night in the postseason. He put in 17 to help Huntington past St. Amant in the most recent Class 5A regionals then 9 in the quarterfinals against Mandeville before Huntington eventually fell in the 5A semis against Hahnville — which Lee and Co. forced into a six-point halftime deficit.
Lee was also an invited participant in Shreveport’s City-Wide Celebrity High School All-Star Game, held in March.
