You might picture the Robinson Stadium Support Facility as a darkened cathedral this time of year.
Just momentos to glories past — I noticed they’ve added last year’s trophies to the main foyer displays — and coaches’ offices left empty for golf dates.
Not even close.
The area was abuzz with activity this week, as players participated in voluntary offseason drilling that includes physical testing, weight training and “lifeskills” meetings; assistants studied cut-up films of last year’s games; various staffers planned for a June football camp; and head coach Rod Broadway prepared for another round of alumni visits as well as a spring recruiting trip.
Broadway told me that he was particularly pleased with the 100-percent participating rate amongst the players, notable for a group coming off so much success in 2008.
“That’s the thing you have to be aware of,” Broadway said. “You have to get them out of their comfort zone. We can’t let them get caught in that trap. Last year doesn’t mean anything. The guys are good about coming and doing things to get better.”
“The Roaring Tiger Tour,” an opportunity for boosters to meet the Grambling coaches and administrators, is making a total of 12 stops this offseason. Previously, the group — which again includes legendary former baseball coach and athletic administrator Wilbert Ellis — has made stops in Bastrop and Lake Charles. Saturday, the tour cranks up again for upcoming stops in Houston, Hammond, Dallas, Shreveport and into Oklahoma.
“Rod Broadway’s Tiger Football Camp” will be held June 14-19. Cost is $280 for the five-day event, including room and board, two t-shirts, three meals a day, recreational games like swimming, weight-training instruction, photos and an awards program.
