Louisiana 5A All-Stater to bolster Grambling secondary

Defensive back Jordell McCoy, a Louisiana Class 5A first-team All-Stater out of Woodlawn-Baton Rouge, La., is familiar with the Grambling program in the traditional sense of the word: Cousin Kenneth Anio is a starter in the GSU secondary. McCoy (5-11/175) visited campus two Saturdays ago, and that cinched it: He committed to Grambling. McCoy made 106 tackles and six picks last season. Called “a player to watch” by The (Baton Rouge) Advocate, he was also named all district, all metro and was nominated for player of the year despite playing on a team that missed the playoffs with a 4-4 mark.

“I watched film when I was up there, and I liked their defense,” McCoy told me tonight. “I liked the scheme; it’s something where I felt like I could fit in.”

McCoy, recruited by Grambling defensive assistant Andre Robinson, said he runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, giving him the speed to adapt to changing downs-and-distances. “It really doesn’t matter,” he said. “I can play man-to-man or a Cover 2.”

He’s the second defensive back in as many days to join Grambling’s list of confirmed commitments. National Signing Day is on Wednesday.

–ANDRE, AGAIN: A late pledge on Monday came from athlete Deonte Flemings (5-9/170), who played both ways as cornerback and running back at Strong Vincent in Erie, Pa.

Flemings, a member of the Associated Press’ 3A All-state team in each of the past three seasons, helped his team to consecutive 10-3A championships as a junior and senior — finishing with a record of 24-4. He was also named Super All-State and Super All-Metro after recording 13 interceptions and 40 tackles during his freshman season.

Flemings has connections back to Birmingham, Ala.’s Parker High — where Andre Robinson once coached.
